Formula Varsity is a biannual event first introduced in 2006 by Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UTeM. The first programme was organised on 14 September 2006 with sole participation from Universiti Tun Hussien Onn. The subsequent Formula Varsity was held in August 2008 with participations from five Public Higher Education Institutions (PHEI) teams which are Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) , Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) , University of Nottingham Malaysia (NU) , Politeknik Kota Bharu (PKB) and Politeknik Shah Alam (PSA).

The third event which was in October 2010 marked its own record when it succeeded to get 25 teams from various Higher Education Institutions (HEI) as well as nationwide polytechnics to participate. This October 2012 will witness the upcoming fourth tournament which is expecting participations from 30 teams. This makes  UTeM Formula Varsity as one of the scholarly tournaments that gets very favourable response from many HEI.

The concept of this programme originates from the  Formula SAE tournament in the United States of America and Canada. Even though the vehicles developed are of mini size, they are considered as “mini F1” at PHEI level. The tournament challenges engineering students to design, build and race with formula style race machines. This competition gives opportunities to teams from participating institutions to show and prove their engineering expertise over other teams. As for automotive companies, this event is an efficient platform for them to identify and subsequently to recruit graduates to join them later.
